Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea: Player Ratings

Nights like these is what being a Sunderland fan is all about. It's was not all rosey, there was a contrast in brilliant and poor performances. Thankfully the majority were brilliant, as was Gus Poyet who made the perfect substitutions at the right moments.

Nights like these is what being a Sunderland fan is all about. It was not all rosey, there was a contrast in brilliant and poor performances. Thankfully the majority were brilliant, as was Gus Poyet who made the perfect substitutions at the right moments.

Vito Mannone - 7

Starting to feel at ease with him between the sticks, commands the area well - pulled off a good save too.

Ondrej Celustka - 5

Pretty poor I'm afraid. Willian danced around him for most of the match and he looked uncomfortable. His few forays forward did help our attack which saves him a lower score.

John O'Shea - 9

The transformation of our captain since Gus Poyet's arrival and Brown's return is epic. He was tremendous again last night and didn't put a foot wrong. Really like this centre back pairing it will be one of the main reasons we stay up if we do.

Wes Brown - 8

Like O'Shea, brilliant defensively, has to be marked lower as culpable with two errors in the first half which should have been punished. Too good afterwards though.

Andrea Dossena - 4

It must be a strange world inside of Dossena's mind. Petrifies me if I'm being honest. The number of times he disappeared leaving huge chasms down the left was astonishing. Cost us a goal too and might've cost more if his centre backs weren't excellent.

Lee Cattermole - 10

The first full mark I have ever given in these pieces. Unbelievably good. Even when we were at our worst, he carried a three man midfield by himself to keep us in the game. Once Ki arrived, he continued to boss proceedings. Instrumental in the equaliser. First name on the team sheet with performances like this.

Craig Gardner - 3

Everything that was wrong with Sunderland up to his substitution. Everything broke down through him whether be his poor pass or run. There is no future for him here.

Seb Larsson - 7

Like many he struggled up until Ki's arrival but this was his best performance of the season. As usual, he worked hard, but this time with purpose. His set pieces were even on the money and created a couple of chances from open play.

Adam Johnson - 5

Had a pretty good first half and had Ashley Cole caking himself at times. Then did his trademark vanishing act.

Emanuele Giaccherini - 8

We are definitely seeing this lad blossom as he gets used to the English game. Unbelievable technical ability and vision - he will be massive for our survival hopes.

Jozy Altidore - 7

Jozy will probably get some of his usual stick but he had a good game as far as I'm concerned. Ran his socks off, bullied Gary Cahill at times, got an assist and helped to create the space for Ki's winner.

Ki Sung-Yeung - 9

His arrival was like someone gluing the side together. The disjointed side was  suddenly fluent and it became very evident how integral he is to our team. As much as anyone else, basically. His winner will live long in the memory, such immense composure. What a way to open your account!

Fabio Borini - 8

Well, what can you say? He doesn't seen to do a great deal but when he does something it's huge. Nice finish for his goal and assist to boot. Super sub perhaps?

Phil Bardsley - N/A

Not on long enough.
