Martin, Lonergan or Dimi? No sign of Sunderland signings as these three key deadlines loom large

With no game to occupy Sunderland minds this weekend, fans are hoping for a little transfer cheer to get us in the mood for Tuesday's six-pointer at Birmingham. As we count down the hours until the January window slams shut, there's a couple of landmarks to look out for between and now then.

Chris Martin - Yes or No? Deadline: Tea time on Sunday

According to The Mirror, Chris Coleman has given Derby ditherer Chris Martin until the end of the weekend to decide whether or not to join Sunderland on an 18-month loan. The Rams and the Black Cats supposedly agreed to the mechanics of the deal over a week ago before the 29-year-old headed off to Dubai with his teammates for a little warm weather training.

With other Championship sides looking to add additional firepower to their ranks but prepared to wait until the last minute, it's entirely probable Martin is hanging on to see if his agent can muster a more attractive prospect than a relegation battle at the Stadium of Light.

Deadline for inclusion in the Brum squad - Lunchtime on Monday

Never mind the transfer window slamming shut, the deadline for a new signing to make the squad for Tuesday's six-pointer against Birmingham is Monday lunchtime. No new striker by then will mean Josh Maja remains the only bona fide centre forward at the club for a third league fixture - since Jimmy Vaughan naffed off to Wigan over a fortnight ago.

Victory over relegation rivals Hull City last weekend handed everyone on Wearside a boost but with the lower regions of the Championship now so tight, failing to follow it up with a result at Birmingham on Tuesday could yet prove costly.

Barnsley have been in action this afternoon and failed to hand themselves a bottom six boost - beaten by Fulham and are still just two points ahead of Sunderland in 19th place. Hull host Leeds on Tuesday and Reading are the visitors to Fulham with the Royals increasingly looking like they could get sucked into the battle to beat the drop.

Sunderland have also been linked with Leeds goalkeeper Andy Linergan and Boro stopper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos who would both need to be on Wearside by Monday morning to make the trip to Birmingham. Kezemba LuaLua was a surprise signing this week so perhaps Messers Coleman, Symons and Bain have another potential rabbit to pull out of the hat.

Ye Olde Slam Shut - Transfer Window Closes: 11pm Wednesday

Often the most underwhelming landmark of the season, the January transfer window tends to close with more of a sorry clump than the fabled dramatic slam; but Sunderland are a club who traditionally do deals late on the final day so there may be a little flutter of excitement at the Stadium of Light.

Simon Grayson signed Marc Wilson, Jonny Williams and Callum McManaman on deadline day in the summer - a trio that back then we naively thought could be decent additions.

David Moyes had already added Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson by the time the final day arrived last January and perhaps ominously failed to land a striker as Leicester declined to allow Leonardo Ulloa to move to Sunderland. Will the same fate fall upon Chris Coleman? Only time will tell - but there isn't long to wait until we find out.
