Player Ratings: Canny from Maguire but he’s not our man of the match

Apologies our new revamped player rater isn’t quite ready. So let’s go for the old fashioned I tell you what I think and you tell me I’m wrong!

Jon McLaughlin - 7

Decent pen gave him little chance, but he showed some dependable hands throughout the game without really being tested.

Donald Love - 5

Part of a defensive line that really struggled in the opening period before going off injured

Alim Ozturk - 3

Looks a bit of a disaster if I’m being honest. Marked his own shadow well throughout without ever having the pace to keep up with his own touch. Turns like an oil tanker.

Glen Loovens - 5

Wasn’t much better than Ozturk in the first half but seemed to enjoy being part of a back three. Looked a bit more accomplished in the second. A race between him and Ozturk would be like getting through an episode of Vera.

Adam Matthews - 6

A little complacent at times but decent overall.

Bali Mumba - 7

Hard to believe this kid is still only 16! Had a very composed game in the middle. It was a huge vote of confidence for Jack Ross both to start him and to substitute O’Nien rather than him at half time. Big future ahead.

Luke O’Nien - 5

Plenty of graft but struggled to make an impact. Needs some more time to bed in it looked like he hadn’t met everyone yet.

George Honeyman - 6

Led well but probably didn’t get involved in things as often as he’d have like.

Lynden Gooch - 8 (MAN OF THE MATCH)

This kids going to be massive for us this season. Constant threat. Our tactic should’ve been just pass him the ball. Second half he was brought into midfield and gave us that bit of grit which stopped Charlton doing anything. Fantastic.

Chris Maguire - 7

Excellent debut, loses marks for giving a pen away and struggling to deliver with set pieces. Did nearly score from one mind.

Josh Maja - 8

Thought he was excellent. Superb goal, caught the keep off guard and led the line well. Fruitless effort in the first half with little support, but when Sinclair started getting closer to him he finally was rewarded.

Bryan Oviedo - 8

So impressed. The consummate professional on the pitch. Doesn’t want to be here, and looked isolated from the celebrations, but was excellent and put in plenty of effort.

Jerome Sinclair - 7

Looked great, changed the game. Should’ve scored mind. Let’s hope it’s not a serious hamstring injury as he looks like he could cause any League One defence a heap of trouble.

Like Molyneux - n/a

Not really on long enough but won the corner we scored from (if I remember correctly!)
