Player Ratings: Good Result Despite Average Performance

Sunderland picked up a solid point on the road.  The performance wasn’t exceptional but the end result is one most fans would have taken prior to the match.  Here’s the player ratings.

Costel Pantilimon - 6
Saved everything he could.  Was good at claiming the ball in the air, as we’ve come to expect.

Anthony Reveillere - 7 (MAN OF THE MATCH)
Picking a man of the match was really difficult in this game as nobody really stood out.  However, Reveillere narrowly gets it for defending very well in wide areas and bursting forward on a couple of occasions in the first half when we were struggling to get out from the back.

Santiago Vergini - 6
Played his part in earning us a point.

John O’Shea - 6
Marshalled Gomis well on the whole, but failed to recognise Ki’s run into the box for the Swansea equaliser. His distribution was also disappointing today.

Patrick van Aanholt - 6
Defended well and got forward when he could.

Liam Bridcutt - 5
Not the best from Bridcutt today.  He won a few tackles but wasn’t involved enough when Sunderland were struggling to get the ball back.

Seb Larsson - 6
His delivery wasn’t great but he played his part in keeping the Swansea attacks at bay.

Jordi Gomez - 6
Not bad on the whole from Gomez.  He got stuck in more than usual but failed to produce any quality passes when he found himself in an advanced position.

Ricky Alvarez - 6
Tricky Ricky showed some promise today.  In the first half he looked like a fluid player, eager to receive the ball.  His shortcomings came when he made a couple of poor decisions after the break, namely to dive when he entered the area and to shoot from range when Sunderland had numbers forward in a counter-attack.

Danny Graham - 6
Worked hard and won the ball a few times in the first half as a result of pressing the opposition defenders.  He struggled to get involved later in the game as the side began to sit deeper, yet justified selection ahead of Fletcher.

Jermain Defoe - 7
Defoe didn’t actually do much throughout the game, but gets a good mark for scoring a simply wonderful goal.  The swap deal involving him and Altidore is looking more incredible by the day.

Steven Fletcher - 5
Didn’t do much after coming on and was booked.

Adam Johnson - 5
Failed to make the desired impact.
