With the Capital One cup final drawing ever closer, as well as our Premier League game tomorrow, we thought we would bring the best of both worlds with the winners of League Cups or related (you’ll see why) that have played for both Sunderland and Arsenal. Just to add that bit of excitement for you before Wembley way is full of SAFC fans, punters and of course, cheesy chips!
Steve Bould – League Cup
Although his time at Wearside was short due to injury, he was magnificent for us in defence, when he was fit of course. Yes, Steve Bould was indeed a crowd favourite, his no nonsense tackling won over those watching. His time at Arsenal was incredible and shouldn’t be overlooked either. He was part of the ‘Famous Five’ there and helped them to win two F.A. Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Cup Winners Cup.
Anthony Stokes – Scottish Cup
Okay so it’s not an actual English League Cup, but it is the equivalent in Scottish Football and he’s won it twice! Yes, his time at Sunderland was, well, I don’t really remember much of him if I’m completely honest other than his two last minute goals in the then Carling Cup against Northampton Town. He was brought in from Arsenal via Roy Keane with a good reputation as a forward and he even trained with us in 2006 before his move too. Sadly it just didn’t work in the end, and he moved to Scotland, with his best career spell at Celtic, where he has won those two Scottish Cups...so far.
Mart Poom – League cup (runner up)
Poooooooooooom! Sorry, I just wanted to get that out my system. Mart Poom - signed from Derby, played for Sunderland for three years and then joined the Gunners on a free in 2005. ALL Sunderland fans know him for scoring ‘that’ goal against his old side at Pride Park and ever since then, he became a hero with us all. His vigorous warm up and stretching before games proved to be useful in goal – injuries aside of course. Although it’s not quite a cup win to shout about, he did pick up a League Cup runners up medal with the London side, and though he didn’t feature as much as he may have liked, he also bagged one via the Champions League too.
Sebastian Larsson – League Cup
The ever-pointing Swede may be a surprise feature in this, as some may have forgotten he was involved when Birmingham shocked the football world as they won the League Cup in the 2010-11 season, beating Arsenal 2-1 under Alex McLeish. He was their talisman throughout that cup campaign, scoring vital goals and producing assists that carved defences wide open. Vital experience will no doubt, come from him (if he starts) when we head to Wembley. It is worth noting that Craig Gardner and Kevin Phillips were also in that squad too.
Charles ‘Charlie’ Buchan – FA Cup
Now, like most of us, I may be way too young to have seen him play, but I know the name and his success rate at Sunderland and Arsenal. Again, he didn’t win a League cup, however, he completed a feat which will surprise you, he appeared in the FA Cup final with both teams. The older fans may know him for being second on the all-time goal scoring list for the club, scoring 222 goals for us. An incredible forward, that will forever be etched in our club’s history books for a long, long time.
There you have it; some good players to mention that have had some-sort of League or other Cup success. Okay, so they weren’t all winners, but it’s nice to see players who have played for both teams that have either had success before or after us, particularly Larsson who could be vital on the 2nd (Gardner too).
If you think there’s someone missing comment below! Be sure to check out the player database too, I’m sure there is a player in there that will make you think “ah yeah, I remember him”, go on, you know it makes sense!
