Billy Jones becomes the first signing for SAFC as he joins on a free transfer from West Brom.
At 27, Jones is a versatile player mainly utilised at full back in recent years but can play in midfield too. Born in Shrewsbury, Jones started his career with Crewe Alexander, making over 100 appearances for them and his next club Preston before earning his big move to West Brom. His only goal for the Baggies was against the Mags. Good lad.
Certainly not a journeyman, but he rejected West Brom’s final offer of a new contract in favour of a move to Wearside in a reportedly more lucrative deal. He had this to say about his move;
“I’m really happy to be here and I’m looking forward to getting back for pre-season and kicking on.
“I’ve played at the Stadium of Light a number of times so I know what it’s about and what great backing the club has.
“I’ve come to the training ground today and it’s amazing. I knew I was signing for a massive club with everything in place to kick on up the league and carry on moving forward.”
You suspect he has been signed as a direct replacement for Phil Bardsley and, with Santiago Vergini still set to sign, would resolve our issues at right back. The signing comes out of the blue and was wrapped up pretty quickly without being reported until the deal was done. Despite that, the signing is no surprise given our intentions to sign Premier League experience and predominantly English players.
We will have loads more about him in next day or two as we seek to get the low down from those in the know about a player generally under the radar, but please leave us a comment with your initial thoughts!
