SAFC make it two confirmed signings before we even make it to June as Jordi Gomez agrees a three-year deal.
The 29 year-old Spanish midfield will join on a free transfer after his contract with Championship side Wigan Athletic ends on 1st July.
Starting his career going through the youth set up at Barcelona, he left Barca’s B team to join Espanyol – but life in La Liga didn’t work out as he joined Swansea with Roberto Martinez on loan. He would be signed permanently by Martinez the following season, but for Wigan whom he has racked up some 150 competitive appearances over a five year spell.
Gomez brings a more attack-minded approach to midfield, something seriously lacking in our current squad, with the added versatility as a wide player. His goal record is probably not the most impressive, averaging a goal every 7.47 games – but just 8.73 games per goal in the Premier League. Let’s be honest though, if he scored four goals next season that puts him above most of our midfield last term.
Predictably, being Spanish, he is probably better thought of in terms of his technique and ability to protect the ball, so could fit Gus Poyet’s philosophy well. Don't be too caught up on the fact we are signing from a relegated team again, Gomez should fit right in.
More to come on this in the next couple of days!
