A hectic day ended rather sourly for Sunderland as attempts to sign Yann M'Vila, a goalkeeper and a striker fell flat leaving the squad short in key areas. Lots went on and much was reported, how much was true, who knows - but most of it didn't happen.

In total fifteen players were heavily linked in the media with approaches from Sunderland on deadline day. Two signed and, astonishingly, six of those linked were goalkeepers yet we failed to bring in cover for Vito Mannone's injury. Here is a timeline of yesterday's events for you to mull/cry over;

0800 - Didier Ndong travels to Sunderland to seal transfer.
0900 - John Ruddy bid rejected by Norwich.
1000 - Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez reportedly set to leave the club and Sunderland tipped as a club interested.
1100 - Valencia forward Rodrigo linked with £8 million move to Sunderland.
1100 - Reports that Sunderland still keen on Ruddy despite being knocked back by Norwich.
1100 - Steven Naismith reportedly set for £4 million transfer to Sunderland.
1300 - Yann M'Vila confirms via Instagram that he has arrived in London and reports suggest he is looking to force transfer to Sunderland.
1300 - Reports that M'Vila has agreed a pre-contract however Sunderland want transfer done today. Rubin Kazan want £7 million to let this happen.
1300 - Bristol City's Aden Flint rumoured to be set to sign.
1500 - Naismith confirms his agent is trying to make a transfer to Sunderland happen.
1500 - Sunderland confirm signing of Didier Ndong from Lorient for nearly £14 million on a 5 year deal.
1600 - Sunderland linked with Leicester striker Leonardo Ulloa.
1700 - Crystal Palace reject enquiry to bring Wayne Hennessey to Sunderland on loan. Club only have one domestic loan available.

1700 - Jason Denayer hots up as Sunderland try to push loan deal through.
1800 - Naismith deal begins falling apart.
1800 - Sunderland said to have approached St Etienne for goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier on deadline day.
1900 - Naismith deal off as no agreement can be made on personal terms.
1900 - Reports suggest Bordeaux goal keeper Cedric Carrasso has rejected an offer from Sunderland.
2100 - Denayer arrives at the Academy of Light to complete medical.
2100 - Offer made to Getafe for goalkeeper Guaita.
2200 - Denayer deal confirmed on season long loan from Manchester City.
2300 - M'Vila posts odd Instagram story suggesting Sunderland have shunned a deal for the Frenchman.
2300 - Confirmation that late paperwork submitted for Sunderland to try and complete signing of Boavista goalkeeper Mika by 1pm.
0000 - Reports that M'Vila has agreed a pre-contract with Sunderland to sign in January.
0100 - Sunderland confirm deal for Mika is off despite both clubs keen on the deal, suggesting personal terms the issue. There has since been reported today that this deal could still go ahead.
0800 - Reports continue to confirm M'Vila has agreed pre-contract but suggest Rubin Kazan increased demands to £8.5 million on transfer deadline day which Sunderland refused to meet. Player to join in January.

We will have plenty of time to let everything sink in and reflect on the squad we must now compete with up until January. Whether or not Sunderland have done enough remains to be seen, but I have a horrible feeling we have left ourselves too short in vital positions and may pay for that over the next four months. The goalkeeper craic was a complete fiasco.
