Player Ratings: Slow start to the season in a system which didn't work for these players

Sunderland start the 2019/20 campaign in the most 2018/19 of ways with a 1-1 draw.

Ah it's great being a Sunderland supporter, and also being part of a Sunderland blog that just repeats itself over and over. I could literally copy and paste one of 50 opening paragraphs into this that we've released for other drab home draws and it wouldn't be out of place.

This time, Jack Ross opted for a 3-4-1-2 which has been deployed throughout preseason and, despite the Lads having a month or so to acclimatise to the change, many of the players were not sure where they were meant to be or what they were supposed to be doing. A Lynden Gooch penalty rescued a point that would not have arrived had we relied on goals from open play.

A bleak start, but it is just one game - and what better way to shrug off the cobwebs than against our two big promotion rivals in Ipswich and Portsmouth? It's going to be an interesting August!

For now though, our player ratings are back! As always, scroll down, select a rating, leave a comment about that player and we'll pull them all together in a round up piece later.
