Sunderland appointed Lee Johnson at the beginning of last week and after his success at Bristol City they will be hoping that he can bring the same success to Wearside. Johnson has seemingly impressed the Sunderland hierarchy and were incredibly impressed with Johnson’s ability to work within a budget and structure and his player-coach man management skills that he has displayed in previous roles that he displayed.

Although, after his first game in charge, Sunderland faced bottom of the league Wigan Athletic at home and actually lost 1-0 to stay mid-table. This isn’t the start that Johnson would have been looking for and will have to seriously motivate his players in aa different way if they are going to push for promotion. Sunderland fans will be wanting a lot more from their side, especially if they cannot beat bottom of the league.

Johnson isn’t the only addition to the management staff at the club, with them also creating a new sporting director role for the incoming Kristjaan Speakman as the club looks to widen the structure of the club. Speakman has bags of experience in the football league with him having 14 years under his belt at Birmingham City where he was the academy manager for the past 9 years. His ultimate goal will be to lead the transfer policy and try and improve the squad when the January transfer window opens.
