It may have been unimaginable just a few short months ago, but Sunderland’s Charlie Wyke has been on fire in 2021.

The Middlesbrough-born hitman is currently on 19 goals in League One for this season. 12 of those strikes have come since the turn of the year.

Astonishingly, that puts Wyke on a par with none other than Lionel Messi for goals scored in 2021.

If you add the EFL into a table of Europe’s top leagues, no one has hit more goals than Wyke and Messi so far this year. Of course, it’s a bit tenuous to compare La Liga with League One but let’s just take it as a positive.

Facts as noted by a smattering of twitter notorieties:

No player has scored more goals than Charlie Wyke (12) across Europe's top 5 leagues and the EFL in 2021.

The Barca legend and the Wearside wonder have both recorded 12 strikes since the new year chimed. Robert Lewandowski lags behind with 11 while André Silva has 10.

Messi is on a fantastic run of goals having scored in each of his last eight outings. And so too Charlie Wyke with the four goals coming off his head against Doncaster last month swelling his tally for the year to date.

Wyke is currently second-favourite to be League One’s leading marksman this season. The bookies rate him as a 3/1 shot someway behind Peterborough’s Jonson Scott Clarke-Harris who’s rated at around 4/6.

The Posh hitman has 21 goals in League games this season. Eight of them came in a streak of six games before Peterbrough’s stalemate with Oxford on Tuesday night. Clarke-Harris has nine goals so far in 2021.

The Wykester can add to his tally with games against Rochdale and Portsmouth ahead of the trip to Wembley for the Pizza Cup final a week on Sunday.
