Why did McLaren add chrome to there F1?
McLaren’s official statement explains that this chrome livery, showcased at the 2024 US Grand Prix, represents a push for innovation in design, not just for the team but also for Chrome. It’s also a clever nod to the web browser’s name. Beyond the car itself, chrome details will appear on the race suits of drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, adding an extra layer of style to the whole setup.
McLaren’s love affair with chrome in Formula 1
This isn’t the first time McLaren has brought back its iconic chrome from the Hamilton era. Last year at the 2023 British Grand Prix, the team was a big hit with a partially chrome livery, pretty different from this current design. Back then, I was already a big fan of the chrome look, which was inspired by McLaren’s golden age when. In the early 2000s, they were dominating Formula 1 in partnership with Mercedes. During that period, McLaren claimed their last prestigious titles: Mika Häkkinen in 1998 and 1999, and Lewis Hamilton’s driver championship in 2008.

McLaren delight us with special liveries this season
The 2024 season has already seen many special liveries from McLaren, each with its own unique meaning. Earlier in the year, at the Japanese Grand Prix, the team paid tribute to local culture with a livery inspired by Edomoli, a form of traditional Japanese calligraphy. At Monaco, they honored the legendary Ayrton Senna Who remains the driver with the most GP wins there with a stunning yellow and green livery. To be honest, I feel like there’s a serious lack of yellow on the grid this year. Then at the Singapore GP last time, McLaren went retro, incorporating a bold two-tone design reminiscent of their cars from the 1980s and 1990s, featuring a prominent white section across the middle of the bodywork. This latest chrome livery is one of my favorites this year and fits perfectly within McLaren’s lineup of creative and historically inspired designs.
Alpine and Haas: more special liveries for the 2024 US GP
The 2024 US Grand Prix will also see other teams rocking special liveries. Alpine F1 Team has rolled out a bold orange design in partnership with Xbox to promote the new Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny video game. Meanwhile, Haas, the American team, has also prepared a unique livery to celebrate their home Grand Prix, making this weekend in Austin a colorful spectacle for Formula 1 fans. I always enjoy seeing fresh liveries on the grid. Have a look at our related articles!
