A premium lineup to make a statement
The Avinya concept, unveiled in 2023, was designed as more than just an electric MPV. It marks the first step for a new brand entirely dedicated to high-end electric vehicles. This model will be followed by the Avinya X, a large electric SUV that incorporates elements of the original design while offering a more traditional, production-ready aesthetic. Tata Motors plans to roll out a lineup of five vehicles, including compact SUVs and luxurious MPVs, aiming to compete with established brands like Hyundai and Mahindra. For these models, Tata leverages the EMA platform, developed in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover. This modular architecture, combined with a $2 billion investment over the coming years, will enable the production of highly competitive vehicles while opening the door to international markets.
Harrier.ev: The SUV that redefines standards
Alongside the Avinya lineup, Tata Motors has introduced the Harrier.ev, a robust electric SUV designed to appeal to both urban drivers and adventure enthusiasts. Featuring a “Quad Wheel Drive” system (a marketing term for dual-motor all-wheel drive), this vehicle delivers an impressive 500 Nm of torque. Its muscular design, sleek lines, and advanced features—such as bidirectional charging and autonomous parking—position the Harrier.ev as one of India’s most promising electric vehicles. Tata is also launching a “Stealth Edition” of the Harrier.ev, with a matte black finish, rugged design elements, and equipment tailored for challenging terrains. Scheduled for release in 2025 at a competitive price of about $29,000, the Harrier.ev aims to make high-performance, well-equipped electric vehicles more accessible.
An ambitious expansion strategy
The Avinya brand goes beyond a simple facelift of Tata’s existing lineup. Tata Motors plans to build a dedicated facility in southern India, capable of producing more than 250,000 vehicles annually. A portion of this capacity will be allocated to Jaguar Land Rover models, further solidifying the link between the two automakers. Simultaneously, Tata is bolstering its infrastructure to support the shift to electric vehicles. With over 18,000 public charging stations established through strategic partnerships, the company plans to add 500 more stations across the country—an essential step to accelerate EV adoption in India, which still lags in the global race for electrification.
This article explores Tata Motors’ bold strategy in the electric vehicle space, from the creation of its premium Avinya brand and the development of models like the Harrier.ev to massive investments in infrastructure and advanced technologies. An ambitious vision that could redefine the future of electric mobility in India and beyond.
