British firm Recycles 97% lithium from EV Batteries.

A UK-based company, Altilium, has made a groundbreaking advancement in recycling electric vehicle (EV) batteries by successfully recovering over 97% of lithium and 99% of graphite. This feat could dramatically transform the EV industry by providing a more sustainable approach to battery production.

Elevating battery recycling with EcoCathode technology

Altilium’s innovative recycling process, known as the EcoCathode technology, converts end-of-life EV batteries and manufacturing scrap into sustainable cathode active materials. These materials are then reused to produce new batteries, aligning with global sustainability goals and helping automotive manufacturers meet new regulatory requirements.

Addressing the rise of LFP batteries

The increasing prevalence of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries presents unique challenges and opportunities in the recycling sector. Altilium is at the forefront of addressing these challenges by enhancing the commercial viability and environmental benefits of LFP battery recycling. Through its advanced technology, the company efficiently extracts valuable materials like lithium and graphite, which are crucial for the production of new anodes.

Expanding UK’s battery recycling capabilities

Altilium operates two facilities in Devon, England, known as ACT1 and ACT2, where it processes NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries from two leading UK-based automotive OEMs and gigafactory production scrap. The recently opened ACT2 plant in Plymouth has the capacity to recover essential battery metals from the equivalent of one EV battery per day. A planned hub in Teesside aims to become one of Europe’s largest EV battery recycling facilities, with the ability to process scrap from over 150,000 EVs annually.

Strategic impact on the circular battery economy

By expanding its capability to process various battery chemistries, including LFP alongside NMC, Altilium is not only bolstering the UK’s battery supply chain but also supporting the broader transition to a cleaner, more sustainable transport sector. This strategic initiative plays a crucial role in strengthening the circular economy for batteries in the UK, ensuring that valuable materials are recovered and reused instead of being discarded.

The future of sustainable battery production

The shift towards sustainable battery production is gaining momentum, and Altilium’s EcoCathode technology is pivotal in this transformation. By recycling critical materials, the company not only mitigates the environmental impact associated with battery production but also reduces dependence on raw material extraction and imports.

Altilium’s role in global sustainability

Altilium’s efforts in recycling and reusing battery materials are an exemplary model of how technological innovation can align with environmental sustainability. The company’s success in recovering high percentages of lithium and graphite from used batteries not only enhances resource efficiency but also sets a new standard in the battery recycling industry.
