Mazda is hitting hard with a souped-up version of the MX-5, but there’s a catch…
When it comes to affordable driving pleasure, it’s hard not to think of the Mazda MX-5. This little roadster, which has stood the test of time and trends, is making a comeback in 2025 with an even more refined version: the MX-5 Spirit Racing. Designed for purists, this special edition offers a significant power boost, chassis improvements, and a more aggressive look. But here’s the bad news: only 200 units will be produced, and they will be exclusively available in Japan.

A revived sporting lineage
Mazda is no stranger to sports cars. Remember Mazdaspeed, the performance division that once produced more radical models? After being put on hold for over 10 years, Mazda is returning with “Spirit Racing,” a new performance branch that debuts with this turbocharged MX-5. The idea behind this version? To deliver an even sharper MX-5 without losing the model’s DNA—a lightweight, responsive car that’s a joy to drive. To achieve this, Mazda has reworked several elements, starting with the engine and handling.
More power and a sharper chassis
Under the hood, the MX-5 Spirit Racing still uses its 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, but Mazda has given it a testosterone boost. With new camshafts, a reworked cylinder head, new pistons, and an updated exhaust manifold, the engine’s output increases from 180 to 197 horsepower. This power boost is accompanied by improved torque, even though Mazda hasn’t released the exact numbers yet. But the real magic of this special edition lies beneath the bodywork. Mazda has installed Bilstein dampers—a benchmark in the field—along with an underbody reinforcement bar and optimized tires to improve stability and grip, especially on the track. The braking system has also been upgraded with prominent red calipers behind the new six-spoke Rays TE37 wheels. Mazda has thought big to transform its MX-5 into a true race machine.
A more aggressive look and a revamped cabin
While the base remains that of a classic MX-5, the Spirit Racing still features a few distinctive elements. Up front, a larger splitter gives it a more aggressive look, while more pronounced side skirts accentuate its visual aggression. Mazda has also added black badges and specific stickers to underline the model’s exclusivity. Inside, the atmosphere becomes even sportier with Recaro bucket seats, four-point harnesses, and red stitching. The overall design stays true to Mazda’s philosophy: simple, effective, and built for driving.
A model reserved for Japan, but with huge potential
The only real downside to the MX-5 Spirit Racing? It will only be available in Japan, with just 200 units produced. This is a disappointment for brand enthusiasts in Europe and the United States, who were hoping to see a more radical MX-5 hit their roads. But all may not be lost. If the enthusiasm is strong, Mazda might be tempted to develop additional versions under the “Spirit Racing” banner, or even export this special edition to other markets. And that would be really great news!
