An innovative fabric born in Japan, adopted by Italy
It all began in 1970, when a Japanese scientist, Miyoshi Okamoto, invented a synthetic fiber made from polyester and polyurethane. His goal? To replicate the look and feel of suede while creating a versatile material. Originally named Ultrasuede, this revolutionary product quickly found applications in various industries, especially fashion. But it was in Italy that it truly flourished. In 1981, the company Alcantara® SPA was established near Rome to produce this material, now known as Alcantara®. Italian automotive designers were soon captivated by its potential. The first model to feature it? A Lamborghini concept car designed by Bertone in 1974. But it wasn’t until 1978, with the Fiat X1/9, that Alcantara® made its way into a production car.
Why the automotive industry loves Alcantara®
The success of Alcantara® in the automotive industry is no coincidence. In addition to its soft feel and premium appearance, this material offers significant advantages over traditional leather. Unlike leather, Alcantara® doesn’t get scorching hot under the sun. Its lighter weight also makes it an ideal choice for sports cars, where every gram counts toward performance. This material is also highly valued for its durability: it resists wear and stains quite well, making it perfect for everyday use. Today, you’ll find it in luxury cars, from Italian supercars to German sedans and even ultra-sporty British vehicles. And the cherry on top: Alcantara® is also highly customizable, offering an almost infinite range of colors and textures. Perfect for coloring the seats of your Ferrari or McLaren in blue—or even red!
A modern and eco-friendly choice
As leather faces increasing criticism for its environmental impact and links to intensive livestock farming, Alcantara® has emerged as a more sustainable alternative. Since 2009, its production has been certified carbon neutral, adding an eco-friendly dimension to its appeal. But beware—success attracts imitators. Many knockoffs are on the market, often of inferior quality. To reassure its customers, Alcantara® SPA even provides certificates of authenticity. And with growing demand, production remains a constant challenge. Every piece undergoes manual inspection to ensure quality, a process that remains almost artisanal despite increasing automation. Some brands also produce their own Alcantara®-like material, such as Porsche with its Race-Tex fabric. But as far as they’re concerned, we’re obviously still talking about a high-quality material!
This article explores the fascinating history of Alcantara®, from its invention in Japan to its widespread adoption in the automotive world. Loved for its elegance, durability, and reduced environmental impact, this material is set to remain a staple in the world of luxury and sports cars. And now, you’ll be able to impress your friends by telling them all about it!
