Despite 273 fewer horsepower and an engine cut in half, this modernized version of the AC Cobra promises to be just as fun to drive as the 1960s icon

The legendary AC Cobra, an icon of 20th-century automotive history, known for its timeless style and roaring American V8, is about to undergo a bold facelift.

The British brand AC Cars, recently revived, is announcing a turning point in the history of this 1960s icon: a 390-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine will be installed under its hood. Purists are already crying scandal, but this evolution could very well appeal to a new generation of enthusiasts.

A compact yet powerful engine

Since its debut in 1962, the Cobra has built its reputation with its powerful Ford V8. However, AC Cars has decided to shake things up with the introduction of a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. While its 390 horsepower may seem modest compared to the 663 horsepower of the supercharged V8 version, this new engine brings notable advantages. Lighter in weight, it promises better handling and reduced fuel consumption—an important advantage in an era where energy efficiency is key. In addition, AC Cars now offers two transmission options: a 6-speed manual for purists and a 10-speed automatic for those who prefer modern comfort. This choice reflects the brand’s desire to broaden its audience while maintaining the Cobra’s sporty spirit.

An ambitious rebirth of the AC Cobra

After a long period of dormancy and a bankruptcy in 2008, AC Cars was reborn in 2023 with the goal of reinventing the Cobra for the 21st century. The brand isn’t just reviving a model; it’s injecting innovation while respecting its roots. The extruded aluminum chassis and carbon composite body showcase modern engineering, while preserving the elegance of the original lines. This rebirth comes with a premium positioning. With a price tag around $310,000 for the V8 models, the Cobra is clearly aimed at a wealthy clientele. The 4-cylinder version, expected in 2025, could attract buyers seeking a more accessible sports car while still being exceptional.

An evolution that divides

While this new approach offers interesting prospects, it’s not without controversy. Purists view the arrival of the 4-cylinder engine as a betrayal of the Cobra’s DNA. How can the distinctive growl of the V8 be replaced with the more subdued purr of a turbocharged engine? However, the brand is betting on improved dynamic performance and reduced operating costs to silence the critics. Moreover, AC Cars isn’t just modernizing its mechanical offerings. The Cobra’s interior is also making a leap into the future, with high-quality materials and advanced technologies. Touch screens, carbon fiber seats, and cutting-edge infotainment systems are now part of the mix. These additions aim to combine comfort and performance while appealing to luxury sports car enthusiasts.
