A brand-new model of the latest Tesla Model 3 “Highland” version has been heavily modified in the Netherlands to accommodate a coffin in the rear.
It’s hard to picture a Tesla Model 3 as a hearse, yet it’s a reality. This radical transformation, carried out by Derks Funeral Mobility, is now for sale at just under $125,000. A conversion that stands out both in design and purpose. Let’s take a closer look at why this one-of-a-kind Model 3 is raising eyebrows.

A complete transformation
Forget the classic silhouette of the Model 3. Here, the wheelbase has been extended, and the entire rear section has been redesigned and raised to house a glass-enclosed compartment for the coffin. The specially designed tailgate allows for easy access. The interior has also been modified, with a partition separating the front seats from the funeral compartment. Notable features include LED lighting and side storage for floral arrangements. With just 34 miles on the odometer, this Tesla hearse is ready for years of service—and in complete silence. Ideal, isn’t it?
Why a Tesla Model 3 as a hearse?
This isn’t the first time a Tesla has been converted for this purpose, but it is a first for the Highland version. The appeal of an electric platform is obvious: zero emissions, smooth and silent operation—perfectly suited for a funeral procession. Plus, the Model 3 offers solid range depending on the version: 363 mi for the rear-wheel-drive model, 342 mi for the all-wheel-drive version, and 297 mi for the Performance variant, which delivers 460 horsepower and a 0 to 60 mph time of just 3.1 seconds (though that’s not exactly a key selling point here). It’s certainly a departure from traditional hearse brands in the U.S., like Cadillac and Lincoln.
A company specialized in unique conversions
Derks Funeral Mobility is no stranger to unconventional funeral vehicles. The Dutch specialist has already designed hearses based on models like the Nissan Leaf E+ and Mercedes E-Class. Their lineup includes various versions with different levels of customization. The goal? To provide modern and eco-friendly alternatives for funeral service providers. The Tesla Model 3 hearse is part of a growing market shift, where electric vehicles are gradually replacing combustion-engine models—even in the funeral industry.
