Diesel is about to become a national priority: China has just set a new efficiency record, proving that combustion engines still have a future

Date:

The diesel engine world has just reached a historic milestone. Weichai Power, a major player in the industry, has unveiled a diesel engine with a record thermal efficiency of 53.09%.

To give you an idea, it’s like a sprinter finishing the 100 meters in under 9 seconds. This progress, validated by international certification organizations, represents a technological breakthrough that could change the way we see diesel engines!

The diesel engine isn’t dead yet

Since the invention of the diesel engine 127 years ago, improving its efficiency has always been a major challenge. Thermal efficiency measures the amount of energy extracted from the fuel that is actually converted into useful power. Until now, the 50% mark seemed almost unattainable. However, Weichai Power has methodically pushed these limits since 2015. Achieving 50.23% in 2020, then 52.28% in 2022, the Chinese company has shown it’s not stopping there. Behind these advancements is a team of engineers and researchers who have optimized every aspect of the engine year after year.

A technological improvement on several levels

This record is no accident. To achieve such efficiency, Weichai Power perfected four key elements of the engine: combustion, air intake, fuel injection, and internal friction reduction. Every detail matters: more efficient combustion, better-controlled fuel injection, and reduced mechanical losses all contribute to small efficiency gains. The company has filed 176 patents and 68 utility models during this process. This shows the scale of the work done to push the boundaries of energy efficiency. A few years ago, diesel engines were considered the absolute evil, greatly tainted by Dieselgate. Today, this major discovery could well restore their image. But why is it such a great improvement?

Massive savings and positive environmental impact

A more efficient engine means less fuel consumed for the same power, and therefore less pollution. By increasing thermal efficiency from 45% to 53%, fuel consumption can be reduced by 14%. This represents an annual saving of 31 million tons of diesel and a reduction of 97 million tons of CO₂ emissions. For a truck driving 155,350 miles a year, this translates to savings of about 12,000 liters of fuel, or nearly $13,000 per year at current diesel prices. But ultimately, the impact goes far beyond the automotive industry: this breakthrough could also benefit the agriculture, construction, and energy production sectors. One question remains: with such energy efficiency, could the diesel engine become the priority for manufacturers and replace electric engines? It’s hard to think so, given current regulations. But everything could change.

This article explores how Weichai Power has pushed the boundaries of thermal efficiency in diesel engines, reaching a record 53.09% efficiency. Thanks to innovations in combustion, injection, and friction reduction, this breakthrough offers significant economic and environmental gains. It marks a turning point in the industry, paving the way for a new era for thermal engines
