A $200,000 Lamborghini SUV flips over in a crash and catches fire in the worst possible place

Date:

An accident as improbable as it was spectacular shook Sicily, Italy, last January: a Lamborghini Urus flipped over before catching fire after colliding with a modest Fiat Idea.

A scene straight out of an action movie that quickly went viral on social media. Fortunately, despite the severity of the crash, no one was seriously injured. But how could such an accident happen?

What happened with this Lamborghini and this Fiat?

The incident took place near a gas station close to Donnalucata. The Fiat Idea, a small budget minivan, was about to turn in to refuel. Behind it, a Lamborghini Urus—a luxury SUV priced at over $200,000—whose driver seemed to be in a hurry. Attempting to overtake without anticipating the Fiat’s maneuver, the collision became inevitable. The impact was brutal. The Lamborghini hit obstacles on the roadside, sending it into a rollover before coming to rest upside down. The Urus is a heavy SUV with a relatively high ground clearance, which may explain why it rolled over due to the force of the impact. Moments later, the SUV burst into flames before the eyes of stunned witnesses. Fortunately, the worst was avoided, but we can all agree: a gas station is one of the worst places for a fire.

Images of the crash spreading across the web

The most striking part of this story is that despite the violent crash, both drivers walked away nearly unscathed. Bystanders quickly stepped in, emptying several fire extinguishers on the burning vehicle while waiting for emergency services. Their quick reaction may have prevented a larger catastrophe, especially given the proximity to a gas station. Photos and videos of the accident quickly spread across social media, sparking thousands of comments. Many were amused by the contrast between the Lamborghini, reduced to a burnt wreck, and the Fiat Idea, which escaped with only minor front-end damage.

When luxury cars catch fire

This isn’t the first time a Lamborghini has gone up in flames after an accident. In recent years, several models from the Italian brand have suffered from sudden fires, including the recent Revuelto in New York. While the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, these incidents always reignite debates about supercar safety. However, flames are not always inevitable—fortunately! More recently, another Lamborghini Revuelto was crashed on its delivery day in Lebanon, and no fire was reported. The same goes for the F40 near London in early January. The accident also raises another question: is power and speed always an advantage on the road? With 666 horsepower under the hood and a top speed of over 190 mph, the Urus is no ordinary SUV. But in city traffic, even the fastest cars can’t defy the laws of physics.
